International Dolls

My father travelled extensively through his work as I was growing up. When visiting a new place, he would try to bring back a doll from that country. They were typically dressed in native costumes and ranged from exquisitely detailed to simple and very basic. While most are no taller than 12 inches, I realized that painting them as life sized figures imbued them with an entirely different presence and impact. In these paintings, I found inspiration in the work of one of my favorite painters, Édouard Manet.
